Space Truckin'

One of the central tenets of the Pegwars universe is that the future is not so dissimilar to what we are familiar with now.   Spaceships are not outlandish things, they are merely futuristic cars.  Most are low-cost, practical and plain people-movers, most people just need transportation and will pay the lowest amount they can get away with for a vehicle that ticks the right boxes.
Some spaceships are enthusiasts' vehicles - sportships, where the fun of flying them outweighs the practicalities or the cost.  Modded ships.   Ships with cusom paintjobs.   Ships that should never have had spaceturbos installed...

Atmosphere Rendering, part 2

Still doing work on my Atmosphere Shader, however it's proven to be quite the resource hog!
The current implementation is a fairly typical screen-space shader.  It ray-traces the light from the sun through the atmosphere until it hits the current pixel fragment, calculating the sun transmittance along this ray.  Then it marches that ray towards the camera, blending it over the background performing in and out-scattering again until it reaches the final fragment colour.
Incorporating Mie and Rayleigh scattering in the ray-tracing gives the following results :
Adding the clouds into the mix (as a prototype) gives results with I think outstanding potential....

the rock of polynesia

Niue, pronounced 'New-ay', a rock in the Pacific, one of the largest coral islands on earth. It's the first country to offer free, state-funded, wireless internet to all its residents and has a goal of being completely solar powered— uuuh... wow?

We'd also heard that the school gave all of the kids laptops, this, with free internet, makes it a paradise for people like us. Already then, we made plans to move there — like all places in the tropics with a good connection and supply of coconuts and beer. I remember when we were speaking of staying in Nuku Hiva...

internet in paradise

Huahine, one of the many grouped islands in French Polynesia. Our plans for future ocean voyaging could have ended here, because we almost crashed onto a reef.

Because we always time our arrival with the morning sun, I always get the first look of every island. Huahine stood in front of us, a series of volcanic peaks marked by deep valleys and blanketed in green, an island that came into being million of years ago.

We were heading for Baie d'Avea, to the south of the island.

From privacy to privacies

Privacy is not a static concept but an attitude that is distributed over all the actors: a ‘person’, the environment (home, street, shop, office..) and the objects. Privacy is thus a relation. We can actualize it as levels of accountability.
Privacies can be worked on.
Privacy is a red herring. Citizens never had any privacy from government surveillance. Companies want you happy and rich and do not have an interest in crippling you, on the contrary.
We all profit from a system in which people control their own data and auction to service providers. Transparency and accountability in such a system would make...

https://invidious.privacyredirect.com/watch?v=KcHQew1NFko

Procedural Content Creation F.A.Q. - Project Aero, Houdini and Beyond

https://player.vimeo.com/video/211742962

I’ve finally found the time to put together a long-requested video demo for Project Aero and would like to use this opportunity and answer some of the questions I’m often hearing in its regard.
Procedural Aircraft Design Demo from Denis Kozlov on Vimeo.
What is Project Aero?
Project Aero is the software I’ve developed for rapid design of aircraft concepts. The video above demonstrates its main features.
 What does “procedural” mean?
In a wider sense it means “automated” - created algorithmically by a computer (rather than manually by a human operator or sampled like a scan or a photograph). Here are the good places...

rainy with a chance of mosquitoes

Nuku Hiva, a green mountainous island in the Pacific, straight out of Jurassic Park. Just as foreign and just as wild, except instead of hungry lizards there are mosquitoes, also known as the vampires of the Marquesas.

Before arriving, we didn't know what it was going to be like there, we'd barely read anything about it. We knew where we'd anchor, that people there spoke french and that there would be tropical fruit, but beyond that it was a blur, a black spot in our minds. We read the book Fourteen during our 28-day transit from La Paz. In this book,...
