This weekend I attended Indie Web Camp in Baltimore. It’s a fun gathering of people who believe we should own our online identities — pictures, thoughts, short and long posts (and even check-ins in some cases). Post to your own domain, then syndicate to social networks, but remain in control. Core principles of the movement are listed on indieweb.org.

It hit me last evening at a crypto meeting at BitBelgium in Gent. The room was packed. And no hipsters. At all. Jimmy Two Button MiningKingsz spoke wisely of biosmodding and overclocking to get more hash power, the small time grafters looking so smart from the Muide and all over were talking alt coin, Federal Police in the house ( I guess with the obvious photographer :), David doing a fantastic political intro with heart as he called the impressive youngster from Gent4Humanity on stage to talk about the refugees in Calais and how we should have more solidarity simply...

My talk about Uppy, the file uploader I’ve been working on. It’s got sleek UI, fetches files from local disk, as well as remote Google Drives and Instagrams, or you can snap selfies with a camera, preview and edit metadata, and upload files to the final destination, optionally processing/encoding on the way.

The use of digital assistants has continued to expand over the past few years with better algorithms and increased databases. Whether it is Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Siri and Microsoft Cortana or a device that is generally called part of the Internet of Things, (IoT), they are fairly simple in their ability to provide information that could be considered artificial intelligence or a neural network. They are learning preferences but of course they are gathering data as well. That is called marketing!

Неожиданный рождественский подарок: наблюдения запуска Falcon 9, SpaceX прямо из окна автомобиля
Пару дней назад по дороге в Лос Анжелес вселенная преподнесла неожиданный подарок - наблюдения запуска ракеты Falcon 9 прямо через боковое стекло автомобиля. Я в это время была за рулем, но даже на скорости >100 км в час была поражена запуском. Зрелище по красоте сравнимо разве что с полным солнечным затмением этого года. :-)
Да, это был первый для меня запуск ракеты. И мне настолько понравилось, что я серьезно раздумываю, что надо все-таки доехать до Флориды следующим летом. В августе там состоится запуск солнечного телескопа Parker Solar Probe Plus, который полетит к Солнцу. Хотя с другой стороны, такого красивого запуска уже...
Ничто не вечно даже у астрономов
Вчера обсерватория солнечной динамики запечатлела короткую жизнь маленького солнечного протуберанца.
30 часов, 13-14 декабря 2017 года.
Протуберанцы это холодные облака плазмы, висящие в атмосфере солнца там, где позволяет им висеть солнечное магнитное поле. Эти облака бывают гигантскими, сопоставимые по размеру с Солнцем, и маленькими, как, например, выше. Иногда они улетает в межпланетное пространство и приводят к северным сияниям, а иногда тихо падают обратно.
